Is Story Important In Video Games

Story in video games is a very complicated subject. I am not someone who actively follows gaming trends and always plays new games, but I always have a few new games in my computer that I play a little. As a gamer who played many old games until now, I can say some of them can be considered great pieces of artwork. Because they invoked a feeling of awe in me. And I see this tradition of producing good quality games is declining. As their graphical power increases, it makes something in them, a kind of uniqueness disappear. Big gaming companies are losing the old authority they had over gamers at a time. As if gaming is industrialized, and losing what it had in the past.

First, I want to talk about the game ‘Age of Empires 2’. This is a strategy game that you build a city, gather resources and create an army to defeat the opposing player. And what this had was, a type of uniqueness within itself that gave people playing a feeling of really governing a medieval kingdom. And this game is very old, but even if it was, no one said it was bad by looking at its bad graphics. And another very distinct  example can be generally  ‘Counter Strike’. This game is a game that has many different versions, but the thing wanted from player is mostly the same. It has two different sides, which are terrorists and counter terrorists. The mission differs at some aspects, like at one map you are needed to plant a bomb in a location if you are a terrorist and if you are an anti terrorist you should prevent the terrorists from planting the bomb. And even if its story aspect is very weak, it still has an appearance that sells you what is going on according to other aspects of the game.

We come to a conckusion that suggests games had some sort of depth in the past, but not anymore. However, this doesnt mean it will always be like that. And hopefully it wont.
