How to not FOMO?

By Kev HK | DiamondHands | 18 Dec 2022

The fear of missing out (FOMO) is a feeling of anxiety or insecurity that can arise when we believe that we are missing out on something important or enjoyable. It's often fueled by social media, where we see others participating in fun activities or experiencing exciting events, and we worry that we are not part of that experience. FOMO can lead to a sense of inadequacy or a feeling that we are falling behind, and can motivate us to make impulsive or hasty decisions in an effort to catch up. FOMO can also cause us to feel overwhelmed or stressed, as we try to juggle too many commitments or activities in an effort to avoid missing out on anything.

Here are some tips for how to manage the FOMO:

  1. Set clear goals and priorities: By focusing on what is most important to you, you can avoid getting sidetracked by things that may not align with your values or goals.

  2. Practice gratitude: Reminding yourself of what you have can help you feel more content and less focused on what you might be missing out on.

  3. Find ways to stay connected with friends and loved ones: Staying in touch with people you care about can help you feel less isolated and more connected to the world around you.

  4. Seek out new experiences: Instead of dwelling on what you might be missing out on, try exploring new things and finding ways to have meaningful experiences.

  5. Take breaks from social media: Spending too much time on social media can fuel FOMO by exposing you to a constant stream of other people's experiences. Taking breaks from social media can help you focus on your own life and reduce the sense of FOMO.

  6. Remember that everyone's experience is different: It's important to remember that everyone's experience is unique, and what may seem appealing to others may not be the right fit for you.

  7. Practice mindfulness: Paying attention to the present moment can help you stay grounded and focused on what is happening right now, rather than worrying about what you might be missing out on.

  8. Seek support: If FOMO is having a significant impact on your life, it may be helpful to talk to a mental health professional for support.
