We're weeks away from the start of the NFL preseason as the hype and excitement continues to build. Players back on the field, fans back in the stadium, games back on the tv screen. Not much else to say about it when it comes to the NFL. Yes the NBA season and especially the playoffs provided the sports juice we all know and love, but the NFL is the driving sport in these times. Coupled right along with the sport itself is fantasy football and it's extreme popularity amongst football fans. Fantasy sports in general brings fans closer to the statistical part of the game and especially in football. I must say, it's been cool to see some players speak to the world of fantasy players over the year for a good game or a bad game by the player. It's cool because it's not something they have to do because it's not a requirement, but some have spoken on it. This brings me to the topic of this post which is about how hard it's gonna be for the fantasy world of football this coming season. Covid has changed the world forever and for those of you who play fantasy sports such as myself have seen the unpredictability factor/Covid factor already. A couple weeks ago I had to change out several players for my fantasy baseball pick. Some due to injury and some due to Covid related issues. Expect the same this coming football season. The new NFL rules regarding Covid and vaccination has it where teams will even have to forfeit a game if Covid has effected the team to a certain level. There's still not a whole lot of detail about what will constitute a forfeit, but I don't think it really has to be explained in detail from a microscopic level either. Titans QB Ryan Tannehill spoke about the pressure being put on players to be vaccinated and also saying how as a player in the league if you don't get vaccinated then "they will make it miserable for you". That statement alone leaves many wide open questions. Teams played last a season last year without vaccination, but had safety protocols that enable them to make it through the season. This season will obviously be different because there's a vaccine available and while it's optional to the general public, at some point it may or may not be optional in the sports world. This complicates the fantasy world of sports period. Just recently the Vikings had reportedly fired a coach because he refused to be vaccinated, but it later turned out that he was moved to a different position which didn't involve as much contact with players and other staff. One can only wonder how the league will handle the coming season because it's not going to be the same as last season with the new rules and all. Fantasy players are gonna have a rough season playing in a league with a draft and having the same roster all season while not knowing how the league will handle what's going on week to week. This is why I think this year of fantasy football will be one in flux due to the unpredictability. The one thing I hope that doesn't happen is fans beginning to bash players if there is a Covid issue because they also have a life to live and vaccination status is private for some and public for others, which means that just because they are athletes on a global stage in their profession doesn't mean fans have the right to politicize vaccination status for any player. For those who have already done it, or may do it, think about being in their shoes before you do. Athletes are no more obligated than you and I in regards to choosing whether or not to be vaccinated.
