NFL: Colts Hire Saturday to lead Sunday

Earlier this week the Indianapolis Colts fired head coach Frank Reich in a move that surprised many including myself.  It was unexpected because they are still actually in a position to take first place in the division despite the issues at the QB position.  They brought in Matt Ryan with the expectation of solidifying the spot for at least another year, but his play wasn't the best and he ended up being benched.  I think benching him wasn't a good idea at the time, but I do think running the ball more while he adjusts to the offensive scheme might've helped more.  Fast forward and we arrive at the Colts hiring former Colts center Jeff Saturday who's no doubt a legend at the position in Indy and the centerpiece for Peyton Manning on the offensive line in those days.  However, Saturday has zero NFL coaching experience and team owner Jim Irsay didn't hold back from basking in the spotlight of his hire.  Nor did he back down from the criticism of his choice.  There's a lotta questions on many levels behind the move, but I'm not gonna dig into that part of things in this post.  Some say the Colts haven't really recovered since Andrew Luck retired, but I see it from a the Colts haven't recovered since parting ways with Manning.  As good a player as Luck was, he wasn't gonna take the Colts to the heights that Manning took them and they weren't gonna win a Superbowl with Luck.  No that's not a shot at Luck as a QB.  That's me pointing to the fact that even for the short time he was there, they didn't make any major strides to secure an offensive line for him and I didn't see that changing anytime soon.  However, that's where I think Frank Reich was turning things around with the missing piece being a QB.  He tried with an aged Phillip Rivers and they made a nice push, then to this year bringing in Matt Ryan with an expectation of the veteran being able to provide enough to keep rolling while they figured out the next move for the future of the position.  Doesn't seem like Irsay had anymore patience for that though so here we are with Saturday leading this team into Sunday against a Raiders team that he recently had a not so good comment about.  In the sports world, that translates to bulletin board material for the team you said it about.  This could very well be an intense game and hopefully one of the better games this year for both teams.  Rest assured all eyes and cameras will be on the new coach, but I have to admit that I actually expect this team to come out and go hard for the new coach.  At the same time don't be surprised if you seem to notice a fire lit under the Raiders considering the recent comment from their star WR Adams questioning if his team can pull it together with all the talent they have.  In a sense, both teams have a lot to prove in this game. For the Colts, it's about proving they made the right move with their decision and for the Raiders it's about proving that they can gel as a unit and rise from the trenches to the trophy.  Definitely gonna be a good watch and with all that said, I'm taking the Raiders to win it by 14pts.
