I came across a useful app that I thought might be worth sharing with the community. If you're new to a country like me, or you're still struggling with the local language, a Telegram bot like this can be really helpful.
What is StepIn?
StepIn is a free Telegram bot built for immigrants and newcomers, currently focused on the Netherlands. The basic idea is to help you understand what's happening around you without having to know the host country's language.
Basically it helps you with integration in two main ways: sharing relevant news summarized in your language, or simplified news articles that help you learn the local language.
It's not a language course and it's not a dictionary. Think of it more as a daily companion that helps you understand what's going on in your new country while gradually getting you more comfortable with the language and society.
Why is it useful?
The thing I found interesting about StepIn is that it combines a few different things in one place, and you don't need to install anything new if you already use Telegram.
It has two main modes. In Native Language Mode, Dutch news is translated into your own language. It currently supports Arabic, Turkish, Ukrainian, Spanish, Polish, and several others. So you can keep up with what's happening in the country where you live without already knowing Dutch.
In Dutch Learner Mode, you get simplified Dutch articles aimed at beginner to intermediate learners, with key vocabulary translated into your native language. I like the fact that it's based on real news rather than the usual textbook-style sentences you find in language courses.
There's also a Practical Guide, which is basically a step-by-step checklist for things you need to arrange after arriving in the Netherlands. From getting your BSN and opening a bank account to registering with a doctor and applying for DigiD, the bot explains each step in your own language, tells you what you need beforehand, and links to the official government sources.
Another nice detail is that the bot remembers your language preference. So messages, explanations, reminders, and other system messages are shown in your language automatically.
It also has a small incentive system using Telegram Stars, where you can receive rewards for completing surveys or tasks.
And for the crypto community, there's something interesting on the roadmap: StepIn plans to add crypto on- and off-ramps, with the idea that newcomers could eventually use crypto for remittances.
How to get started
It takes about two minutes. Open Telegram, search for @StepIn_ai_bot, and hit Start. The bot asks you to choose your language and which mode you want to use. You can change these later with /settings, and you can also choose how many articles you want to receive each day from one or two, up to ten.
