The Next Crypto Hack Might Not Need a Hacker


What happens when your software makes decisions for you when it comes to your crypto?

Cryptography security was always based on a single assumption:

Each transaction is handled by a human.

You connect your wallet, check the amount, approve the transaction and move on.

However, this is beginning to change.

AI agents are no longer limited to instructions on what to do, but are beginning to do things for us.

And it's one of the first areas where this might actually matter in the cryptocurrency world.

AI Agents Are Getting Wallets

An AI agent is not a one-dimensional tool that can simply reply to queries.

Can track information, make decisions and carry out multi-step tasks.

This is even stronger with the agent having a crypto wallet.

Coinbase has already added infrastructure to enable AI agents to have autonomous spending, earning and trading capabilities. The concept is that an agent could be used to pay for services, to interact with DeFi protocols or manage assets without needing a human approval for each individual action.

This seems like a very helpful thing to have!

It poses a totally different security dilemma, however.

Since then the question isn't just:

“Is it possible for someone to take my private key?”

It's:

“What if I'm tricked into the operation of my own AI that I didn't intend?”

The New Attack Surface

Now allow an AI agent to be attached to a wallet.Let an AI agent be attached to a wallet, now imagine that.

You tell it:

Identify the lowest-cost means to make this trade.

Agent looks for information, works with various tools and develops transaction.

What if one of the websites, documents or external instructions that it reads is compromised with malicious instructions?

The agent may read the instructions as part of its job.

This is where it gets weird.

Security experts have cautioned that, unlike the traditional approach of key theft, an AI agent with wallet access can introduce new risks as it becomes a part of the transaction process.

The blockchain doesn't know whether a transaction occurred because it was based on a legitimate decision, the software bug or an AI being manipulated.

Valid and signed transactions are treated as valid in the blockchain, in general.

It does not mind the "how" or "why" of the AI's doing.

Crypto Is Actually Perfect for AI Agents

The interesting part is here.

The fact that this is not a bad development is not necessarily a good thing.

There are some attributes of crypto that make it highly appealing for autonomous software.

AI agents need to:

pay for APIs
buy computing resources
exchange data
receive payments
Communicate with other software
make small automatic charges

Traditional financial systems were not built for software capable of continuous operation and making thousands of machine-to-machine payments.

Programmable payment rails might be available in crypto and stablecoins for this new economy.

According to a 2026 report from Keyrock, referenced by CoinDesk, already over $73 million had been wagered in AI agents for 176 million transactions on the blockchain in the past year.

That's still small compared to the traditional global payments.

However direction is critical.

We're moving from:

Human → Website → Payment

toward:

AI Agent → AI Agent → Payment.

But this could be a huge change.

The Real Problem Isn't AI

This is where I get my thinking wrong sometimes.

It's not always the smarter the AI, the greater the problem.

It's the fact that we're entrusting more and more powerful software with monetary power.

Having an AI have unlimited access to a wallet is very different from asking an AI to summarise the content of an article.

Annoying to have one error in a summary.

An irreversible blockchain transaction can cost you money if you make a mistake.

This is why the future of agentic crypto likely won't involve relinquishing all control to AI.

This will be an issue of controlled autonomy.

The Wallet of the Future May Have Rules

Wallets would not allow an AI to be completely in control, but rather would impose restrictions, including:

Spending limits

There is a limit on how much the agent can spend.

Approved destinations

Only addresses or contracts that have been approved can be interacted with by the agent.

Transaction limits

Human verification is needed for large transactions.

Temporary permissions

The agent does not receive the access permanently, but for a limited time.

Emergency controls

The wallet can automatically suspend activity if it detects suspicious activity.

Such controls are already a topic of conversation regarding agentic wallets and independent crypto systems.

I'm actually quite convinced this is where the real innovations are going to occur.

But not to make AI agents smarter.

However, in making them safer to trust.

The Strange Future Ahead

Consider how this might look in the future.

You wake up.

Your AI agent has already:

compared cloud-computing prices
Experienced the most economical service.
received a payment
Transferred money from approved accounts
monitored a DeFi position
Rejected a dubious transaction.Denied an unusual transaction.

You didn't hand out all of the approvals.

You just provided the agent with some rules.

There you have a wallet that's no longer a wallet.

It's turning into a financial operating system for software.

And here's a really interesting one:

Will humans or machines be the larger crypto user?

Whenever we hear about crypto adoption, we typically imagine millions of people receiving crypto wallets.People tend to think of crypto adoption when they think about millions of people getting crypto wallets.

However, there might be another way.

Eventually there will be billions of AI agents who will require wallets as well.

Unlike people they didn't have to work 9 to 5; they could work around the clock.

But There's a Catch

The more independent transactions, the more independent mistakes.

When the machine moves money, attackers need only to discover one point of weakness in the money-moving machine.

As a result, the next generation of crypto security might take a different approach: it might not just be about protecting private keys, but about what an authorized agent can do.

The private key could very well be completely secure.

All the same, the transaction could still be incorrect.

That's what I believe is the more interesting part of this story.

Final Thought

For years, Crypto has been making financial transactions easier for humans.

That might all change with the power of AI.

In lieu of humans moving money using software, software could move money to do tasks for humans.

That's incredibly powerful.

It also means that the definition of a “crypto hack” could be evolving.

The next big thing could not be a private key theft.

It can be an AI that was given permission to act — only that it was misguided and given permission to act against its owner's best interests.

If that should happen, we might find out what it is to teach AI how to spend is the most difficult part.

It's instructing, when it shouldn't be taught.
