The internet has created a lot of cool things. It's created a lot of cool content for us to consume. It's created platforms for people to socialize. It's even created a medium for companies to reach out to consumers.
But some of these companies go beyond just reaching out to consumers. Some go as far as being relatable to their consumers. It isn't enough to just be able to contact your consumers on social media, it's necessary to try to BE one of your consumers.
In particular, I'm referring to brands on Twitter with memes. I'm a fan of memes and I love seeing brands engaging their consumers. It gets more eyes on the brand and builds rapport with those that already enjoy the brands. But sometimes there are moments in social media and meme history that just stick out more than others.
I just wanted to take a moment to think back and remember the time that Hamburger Helper released a mixtape. This was announced on April Fool's Day as a joke, but there was actually a mixtape that was released. Hamburger Helper was using the popular meme of "yo, droppin the hottest mixtape" as their route to internet relatability. Through the use of Soundcloud and Twitter Hamburger Helper released a delicious mixtape consisting of 5 tracks.
I do not know why this feat is so astounding to me but it has always been one of my favorite stunts in social media and public relations thus far. The fact that actual content was created and delivered is great. Not to mention, the music created wasn't THAT BAD either. Trust me, I loved being able to ask people "if they had heard the lastest Hamburger Helper mixtape" and then whipping out actual music for them to listen to.
Check it out here if you don't believe me. Decide for yourself if it's good or bad or if I am just having a fever dream right now and going crazy.
Thanks for letting me share this little nugget of internet and brand history with you. I'll see myself out now!
