“I’ll take care of myself… but not today.”
“I’ll start that project… once this busy period passes.”
“I’ll sort my life out… when I have a bit more time.”
Sound familiar?
Sometimes, procrastination isn’t just laziness or lack of motivation.
Sometimes, it’s a more subtle mechanism — a form of avoidance with a rational face.
Procrastination dressed in logic
It’s easy to say: “It’s not the right time.”
Or: “I don’t have the energy today, but I’ll definitely do it tomorrow.”
And sometimes, that’s true.
But often, we postpone because we don’t want to face the emotional discomfort that action brings.
Cleaning up your life often means admitting:
– Where you’ve been dishonest with yourself.
– Which relationships no longer nourish you.
– What lifestyle choices do more harm than good.
And that hurts. It’s not comfortable.
So… we choose “tomorrow.”
Tomorrow, a temporary shelter
“Tomorrow” is often a fictional place where we hope a braver version of ourselves will show up.
More motivated. More energised. More ready.
But the harsh truth is… that version won’t just appear.
It is built precisely in those moments when you feel unready. Unclear. Afraid.
What I learned from my own “tomorrows”
I’ve had hundreds of “I’ll do it tomorrow” moments.
Some stretched into months. Others into years.
The most painful one was tied to an important conversation I kept delaying.
I told myself we’d talk… when we’re calmer, when I’m braver, when the timing feels right.
That timing never came.
And the person drifted out of my life without that conversation ever happening.
Since then, I often ask myself:
What am I really losing by postponing?
How to spot when procrastination turns into emotional avoidance
-
When your reasons sound logical, but deep down you feel it’s fear.
-
When “it’s too late today” has been your excuse for 3 weeks now.
-
When you have energy for everything except that one thing.
A gentle challenge
Think of one thing you’ve been postponing.
It might be small. Or huge.
But it sits there in the background, draining your energy simply because you keep avoiding it.
What small step could you take today, without waiting for a more perfect version of yourself?
