A scammer using the phone number (818) 600-1813 called me and told me that a password reset request for my Coinbase account was made from a country I don't live in. I asked, "How do I know you're really from Coinbase?" He said he was sending me an email right now (I didn't tell him my email over the phone).
For a second, I thought he was legit because the email came from a real coinbase.com email address ([email protected])
The content of the scam email looked legit enough, too:
However, I caught the scammer by asking him one simple question:
"Do you know how much my Coinbase balance is?"
"Umm, no, not exactly," he fumbled. "But I can see it's over $30,000, so we very much value your business."
I smiled and said, "Wrong answer. I transferred my crypto out of Coinbase months ago, there's nothing in that account."
The scammer promptly hung up without another word.
Bottom Line
Whoever this guy was, he had my phone number and corresponding email address and knew that I had a Coinbase account. He thought he knew I had a big balance in there, too.
Worst of all, he somehow sent a scam email from a real coinbase.com email address.
Anyway, I just wanted to do my civic duty and let y'all know to be on the lookout for this person.
