Walk&Talk 1: 10 years of Spanish politics in a nutshell

What is Walk&Talk?

Welcome to my new series of articles, Walk&Talk. In this series, I will combine my actifit activity with information of diverse topics.

How did this come to my mind? Well, most of my @actifit reports are nothing special, because I usually walk around my neighbourhood and don't have anything interesting to tell. Furthermore, those posts consume my resource credits and reduce the visibility of my other publications. Then, why don't mix both?

Daily activity

Today I went for a walk with my father, and we visited an area of my neighbourhood I don't usually explore. It has few gardens and a quite traveled road. However, I will consider walking more around that area because there are far less pedestrians in the sidewalks.

Spanish Politics overview

2010-2015: The breakdown of the two-party system

In 2010, the President of Spain was Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, from the socialist party (PSOE) On 15 May 2011 a protest against the austerity measures of the government and the corruption of the two-party system was celebrated, with an unprecedented support. The movement occupied the Puerta del Sol in the centre of Madrid and inspired the 15 October 2011 protests.

In summer, the president called for early elections because of the difficulties at approving a national budget. Mariano Rajoy from the conservative party (PP) won the elections.

In 2014 a new left party, Podemos, was founded inspired by the 15 may movement, defending the revert of austerity and increased participation of people in politics. In 2015, few months before the new elections, news about illegal funding of Podemos from Venezuela and Iran was published. Nowadays we know that those articles were propaganda, with police squads involved in the creation of those fake news. At the same time, a local centre-Liberal party called Ciudadanos started to get attention from mass media and decided to participate in the national elections. PP got the first position, PSOE the second, Podemos the third and Ciudadanos the fourth. The two-system party was broken.

2015-2019: The unstable period

No candidate obtained majority to be elected president, so general elections was repeated and the results were similar. The direction of PSOE party forced resignation of its candidate, Pedro Sánchez, and abstained from the reelection of Mariano Rajoy. Rajoy was relected with the votes in favour of his party and Ciudadanos.

PSOE called for an election to choose its candidate, and Pedro Sánchez was reelected again. In 2018, a court sentenced PP for a corruption scheme existing since its foundation in 1989. PSOE launched a no-confidence motion to replace Mariano Rajoy by Pedro Sánchez and won with the votes of Podemos and some regional parties.

In January 2019, Pedro Sánchez wasn't able to get his national budget approved by the parliament because of the negative vote of some regional parties and called for early elections. He won the elections but didn't get support from other parties. PP was still on second place but really close to Ciudadanos and a new alt-right party entered the parliament, Vox.

The elections were repeated because no president was elected. PSOE remained first, PP regained some votes but remained second, Vox jumped to the third position and Ciudadanos lost 80% of its seats. This morning, Pedro Sánchez was reelected president by only two votes margin, thanks to a coalition with Podemos and the support of some local parties.

Will this new government be able to get stability and pass its propositions or will it get dissolved again in a few months? What do you think?

Thanks for reading this article to the end, and making my effort writing it worthy with your attention.
