For the second installment in my thrift store record huntiny series, I have once again returned to a local Goodwill store. The stakes aren't high, but the foe is formidable. The boxes and bins of dusty old vinyl. Any one can be yours for a dollar.

After searching through each and every box, I finally stumbled upon one I felt worthy of taking home.

Yes, I was feeling the spell of psychedelia. The Byrds' 1968 release The Notorious Byrd Brothers combines elements of bubblegum pop, psychedelic rock, country and folk. The only track I was fimiliar with was "Wasn't Born To Follow," which was featured in the cult classic film Easy Rider.

The album jacket is in fairly decent shape overall: it is at least intact but has some pretty significant edge wear. No matter, this one will still go in my collection. This disc itself has a few scratches but plays just fine, usual popping and grit but luckily no skipping. The name "Kief" is scrawled on the rear of the album and on the vinyl label. These imperfections may bother most collectors, but don't bother me in the slightest.

The album itseld is a quintessential Byrds album with bright melodies driven by the 12-string guitar plucked by Roger McGuinn. It's a lot more experimental than their other albums, but still has that signature Byrds folky tone to it. My favorite tracks are "Change is Now" and "Space Odyssey."

What's it worth? Condition is the main deciding factor for this record, as it's not a particularly rare release. I have the Columbia 9575 print, which is in stereo. Discogs.com market place values it at about $18.

I'd venture to guess that my copy is worth less, due to the name written on it and condition of the jacket. Probably closer to $10.
