PepsiCo's New "Starry" Soda Seeks to Slash Sprite's Market Share

What is Starry?

Starry is the name for a new, upcoming soda to be released by PepsiCo sometime in the first quarter of 2023. It was first brought to the attention of the internet via the SodaSeekers Twitter account. In an impressive sleuth effort, it was discovered that a new domain name was registered by PepsiCo, which further led to speculation of a new soda.

The End of Sierra Mist?

Since 1999, PepsiCo's Sierra Mist soda has sought to dethrone Coca-Cola's Sprite as king of lemon-lime flavored sodas. They haven't been successful thus far, as Sprite is still the market leader.

Starry has begun to hit store inventory lists, as pictured above, and is expected to be available in the first few months of 2023. While some may argue that this may just be a re-branding of Sierra Mist, it could be a new formulation. But how different can a new lemon-lime soda be? We'll just have to wait for our taste buds to find out.

It appears that it will be available in both sugar and zero-sugar formulations. PepsiCo unveiled Starry at the NACS Show. Starry will be caffeine-free. The regular variety will be sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup and clock in at 150 calories per 20 oz bottle, while the sugar-free formulation will contain aspartame, acesulfame potassium, and sucralose.

Perhaps you have noticed that Sprite now comes in clear bottles, as will Starry. The label and logo for Starry bears a very close resemblance to Sprite and uses a very similar color scheme. A rendering, discovered on the web earlier this month, appears to reveal that a 15-pack of cans will be available too.

I will definitely give a try, just for the hell of it. The cola wars continue; this time the battle is on the lemon-lime front!
