What is the Shapella Upgrade?
The name "Shapella" comes from the combination of Shanghai and Capella. The Shanghai is the name for the execution-layer upgrade, and Capella is the consensus-layer upgrade. Each node, any computer running the Ethereum software to connect to and power the network, runs both an execution and a consensus client to connect with one another, validate transactions, and store blockchain data. Once both are updated, the upgrade can be completed.
Where Do These Names Come From?
Upgrades to the execution layer follow Devcon city names and those to the consensus layer follow star names. "Shapella" is the combination of Shanghai, the location of Devcon 2, and Capella, the brightest star in the northern constellation of Auriga.
When is the Shapella Upgrade Coming?
The Ethereum Mainnet will upgrade to Shapella on April 12, 2023 at 10:27:35 PM UTC at epoch #6209536.
How Long Will Unstaking Take?
For those wanting to unstake their Ether, there may be a bit of a wait. The demand for unstaking requests is expected to be quite high, and the Ethereum protocol may take some time to process requests.
Can I Keep My ETH Staked On Coinbase?
Yes, you can continue staking on Coinbase and continue to earn rewards from the protocol, at 6.0% APY.
