Tomorrow I will begin to serialize another novel I wrote a few years back. It also takes place in the near future, in this decade, with developments that are taking place right now.
I write about what fascinates me, what permutations we as human beings will undergo in the next few years, either by choice (wise or foolish), or by necessity, most probably a combination of both.
'Pandemica' entertained the possibility that COVID might spin out of control. I began writing that story with the first news of the virus.
The next story you'll see was written a year earlier, motivated by news articles on the rapid advances in chip technology, nanotechnology and AI, and some provocative statements uttered by Elon Musk on computer to human interfaces, and other high-ups in the industry stating they might soon be shedding their 'meat sacks', that is, their bodies.
This intrigued me enough to envision such a radical turn in human evolution as played out in a few random individuals.
The landscapes I depict all contain a possibility of becoming factual. I belong to the 'realist' sect of novelists. I don't consider myself your typical science fiction writer, though I do admire the best for their ability to captivate us with an engaging story. I admire excellent prose in whatever genre it graces. The subject may have no appeal, but the flow and cadence of the words mesmerize me.
Though I start my stories with catastrophes, I end them with positive resolutions for the human race. They are Utopian, not Dystopian science fiction and a large part of the plot is a guidepost to achieving a happy ending.
I have to write that way. It's in my nature to attempt to solve problems and turn bad into good. I think all my thoughts flow along that line. These are strong instincts and I don't go against my nature when I weave tales. It gives me a purpose, which is to try to help.
I'm beginning another novel that addresses this latest crisis of global warming. The assumption will be that it grows far worse and at a much faster rate than our current models, and again I'll spotlight a select group of enlightened people and their reactions to the collapse it causes. This takes research on rising sea levels, areas most impacted, wildfire destruction, mass migration and the likely, deplorable political responses. I try to keep my story lines probable. That makes them relevant if it happens. I know this might take a year to finish so I'm giving you 'Roland House' as a filler.
I have one other fiction novel from way back, never advertised or read, written when our greatest concern was the disappearance of the ozone layer, and ultraviolet radiation raining down on us from the sun. It follows the same archetype, a disaster hits and people overreact and make the situation ten times worse, in this case rioting against the technology that failed them, trying to erase the past, burning all books and machinery. This is a story of one man's lifelong wandering, who secretly bides his time and makes it his mission to restore knowledge of the past, and educate a new generation of youth ignorant of everything. I'll throw this one in too, if my new project isn't ready to start posting.
Thanks for the readership. I hope you enjoy these children of my imagination and I'll always strive to improve the clarity and fluidity of my style.
