We are a mere 8 days away from the opening of the store on Farsite.
Via the store, you should be able to purchase crates. These crates should provide you equipment or materials with which you can barter, build, or use once the game is fully open.
Why do you need specialized equipment?
The game is set up to have you pursue distinct paths or career disciplines (see graphic below). Obviously you would need different equipment to steal stuff as a Military Path (aka Pirate) than to produce as a manufacturer. The point of the game is to explore new worlds and trade on the burgeoning virtual space economy across planets. Bottom line is you and your ships want to be rich! So you will have to work to get there.
According to the guide, you will have to gather materials (that are unique to each location) to meet blueprint criteria to successfully build a product.
Truth be told, this may turn out to be too expensive to play for my blood - but I am willing to stick around for the opening days to see how things turn out. It's not often we get a chance to join in on something at the beginning. And I HATE playing when others have been around for so long they basically dominate with no effort. There's no fun in that.
But for now, I have two ships with modifiers on them that I earned in prelaunch, so we will see how far that gets me.
