What is the Christmas Surge in Crypto and Why Does it Happen?

By rah | rah | 22 Dec 2025

Sometimes known as the “Christmas Surge”, but very much in line with the stock market’s Santa Claus Rallyis a seasonal pattern where prices often rise around Christmas and into the final days of the year. It’s not guaranteed, but it does show up often enough that traders watch for it. Generally speaking, it tends to affect major cryptocurrencies, namely BitCoin, Ethereum, and large‑cap AltCoins and if it concurs with the stock market it such surges have occurred 79% of the time during this period since 1929.

Last Christmas Eve (2024) serves as a typical example when BitCoin, Ethereum, XRP, and DogeCoin all rose by about 5% on Christmas Eve and very typically such a surge is increased during bullish or recovery phases, especially for BTC, ETH, BNB, LTC, and XMR.

However Crypto Prices in 2025 might well lead to a different outcome - DYOR

Such surges often come about when traders are rebalancing portfolios before year‑end; institutions close short positions, retail investors deploy holiday bonuses and funds are used to adjust holdings for tax or reporting reasons. Furthermore, some other reasons are psychological or habitual with (potential) investors having more free time to spend online as well as a more optimistic mood. The net effect is an upward pressure on crypto prices. However such seasonality only works when the broader trend is supportive and are strongest during bull markets or recovery phases, not during bearish years.

Then we add seasonal promotions that exchanges might offer. The whole market screams consciously and subconsciously BUY! BUY! BUY! and thus sets the scene for a a bullish surge.

I emphasise again that 2025 might be a totally different animal - DYOR!

Finally, as a note of caution, and in particular with reference to my last point there is sadly a dark side with a spike in holiday scams which are also affected by people have free time and more online presence. Couple with this is all to frequently that (again) seasonal tendency for emotional spending, which can distort market behavior or create volatility

So while The Christmas Surge isn’t magic it has established enough of a pattern to look out for, but remember DYOR and my final takeaway on this is that it is more likely to appear when markets are already leaning bullish, and it’s strongest in years where crypto is in an uptrend.

The evidence seems to suggest that 2025 could be one of those 21% years when nothing happens.

As always stay safe and well my friends.
