BitCoin Origins - The Genesis Block

BitCoin Origins - The Genesis Block

By rah | rah | 23 Sep 2025

BitCoin is a phenomenon of the 21st century. There are currently about 19.91 million BTC in circulation, with a further 900 being mined daily. With the maximum supply capped at 21 million BTC, there are fewer than 1.1 million BTC left to be mined although the last one will be mined in 2140. The next halving is anticipated in 2028.

But where did it all begin?

The Genesis Block, also known as Block 0, is the very first block in the Bitcoin blockchain. It was mined by Bitcoin’s mysterious creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, on January 3, 2009, marking the birth of Bitcoin and the beginning of the decentralized financial revolution. The original block height was 0 (the starting point of the blockchain) and the 50 BTC awarded for mining the block - the actual Genesis Block - have never been spent. This only adds to the mystique surrounding Satoshi’s intentions. With it being the first block in the blockchain the Genesis Block is permanently embedded in Bitcoin’s software and doesn’t reference any previous block as, fairly obviously, none existed.

As mentioned above, the Genesis Block has been attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto, whose true identity remains unknown - some even speculate as to whether he even exists and one of the suspected individuals whose name actually is Satoshi Nakamoto denies all knowledge. A recent BBC documentary in addition to speculating that it might have been one of his neighbours, who saw the name, has also come of with a shortlist of six possible candidates, but is less than sure that it is any of them. Additionally, it might be a collective name for a number of collaborators. it’s assumed that Satoshi (whoever he or they are) still controls the Genesis Block, with them never being moved, or has chosen to leave them untouched as a symbolic gesture.

While technically, the 50 BTC mined in the Genesis Block are considered unspendable due to how the block was coded, the same BBC documentary described them as priceless and I am not able to argue the toss through a lack of knowledge (comments please).

The zero value argument states that even though they exist on the blockchain, they cannot be transferred or used, making their market value effectively $0.

Even so, their symbolic value is priceless.

The Genesis Block isn’t just a technical artifact—it’s a philosophical statement. It launched a movement that challenges traditional finance and empowers individuals.

A bit more technical from me today. As always stay safe and well my friends.
