Transactions per second(TPS). Why they matter, and why they don't.

What is TPS?

In fast and versatile systems such as blockchains in order to measure ones throughput or put it simply speed, people started to use a metric called Transactions Per Second(TPS), what TPS tells us is how many transactions blockchain can carry out in a second. TPS isn't only used in blockchains but also it is used to measure speed of different financial systems speed around the world.

What also matters is transaction finality time(TTF) which equals time that takes for transaction on blockchain to become immutable and irreversible.

What are the current maximum TPS's of different blockchains and systems around?

  • Bitcoin -  7 TPS, and a TTF of 60 minutes.
  • Ethereum - 27 TPS, and a TTF of 78 seconds.
  • Ripple - 1500 TPS, and a TTF of 3-5 seconds.
  • Binance Smart Chain - 150 TPS, and a TTF of 75 seconds.
  • Cardano - 250 TPS, and a TTF of 5-10 minutes.
  • Polygon - 7000 TPS, and a TTF of 2-3 seconds.
  • Solana - 50000 TPS, and a TTF of 2-46 seconds.
  • Polkadot - 1500 TPS, and a TTF of 30 seconds.
  • Avalanche - 4500 TPS, and a TTF of 1-3 seconds.

Why it matters?

In order to ensure fast, seamless operation of blockchain TPS and TTF in theory should be high enough for its current amount of possible interactions which is based on amount of its current users.

What the problem is?

According to "Blockchain Trilemma", the three pillars building a decentralized blockchain, scalability - speed, security and decentralization cannot scale indefinitely. There are drawbacks for each of these pillars which affects the others. Such tradeoffs are for example Solanas high speed of 50000TPS causes troubles in its security and decentralization, Bitcoin security and decentralization slows it down to a mere 7TPS, Ethereum decent speed and security produces flaws on its decentralization, etc.

Why it doesn't matter?

What personally bothers me, in current state of industry is the fast paced race for who will be the number one blockchain. In my humble opinion future isn't composed of a single blockchain to rule them all, but rather it's a multichain, interoperable future. But after all I may be wrong. But what we shouldn't forget is why Blockchain Industry thrives and grows, despite many bad actors and aggressors from outside. It is need for decentralized, fast, robust, safe, trustless and fair systems, in contrast to today's faulty, centralized ones. There have been examples of great accomplishments in expanding capabilities and limits of all of three pillars, without the need to choose one and discarding others.
