On the Hunt for Passive Income Apps #1: SimCash

By tipplenurkey | Proven Passive | 22 Jul 2020

A fellow Publish0x author recommended this app to me, so I decided to give SimCash a try.  The app claims to share your phone's SIM to send SMS to numbers in countries of your choosing.  It also allows you to choose how much you get paid (in Euro) per message per country, but warns that high prices may result in fewer SMS.  It is recommended that SimCash users have unlimited data and unlimited texting to avoid overage charges.

Let me start by saying that I am a US resident with phone service through Straight Talk, a no-contract prepaid service provider that offers unlimited data and texting plans, which I use.  Overage charges are not possible through Straight Talk because it is prepaid.  I also live in a fairly remote rural location where GSM mobile service is patchy at best, so my results may not reflect the earning potential of users in areas with access to consistent, high quality signal.

Now, on to the goods.  The average default price per text is 0.005 Euro and I have enabled texting only to the four countries listed in the app with a +1 country code (I do not have international service).  In the last 12 hours, 12 messages have been sent from my SIM, putting my balance at 0.06 Euro.  Payouts can be requested in the following ways:

  • International transfer to another SimCash account (no fee, minimum 0.5 Euro)
  • XRP Ripple (no fee, minimum 6 Euro)
  • BTC Bitcoin (2.9 Euro fee, minimum 15 Euro)
  • PayPal (1.5 Euro fee, minimum 6 Euro)
  • Bank transfer Euro (10 Euro fee, minimum 50 Euro)
  • Bank transfer USD (15 Euro fee, minimum 50 Euro)

Based on these numbers, I will probably make my first withdrawal attempt through XRP to my cold wallet (possibly via a trusted mixer), preventing the app from being given any kind of access to my bank or PayPal accounts or any software/exchange wallets.  If and when I make a successful withdrawal and receive funds, I will come back here with proofs in an update.  There is another question to ask concerning SimCash: is it safe?

I've done a little online research and, while a few sites do point out that allowing an unknown third party to have access to your SIM poses a threat to the security of any personal information saved or sent from that phone and makes the owner of the phone liable for any illegal activity conducted by that third party, I have yet to hear of any actual breach of security or legal liability issues arising from the use of the app.  It is worth noting, though, that in order to use SimCash, it must be set as the default SMS app.  This could compromise sensitive data if, for example, you receive 2FA messages to the same phone from banks and other financial institutions, digital wallets etc.  I would strongly suggest disabling SimCash and switching the default messaging app back to whatever you were using before SimCash if you need to send or receive sensitive information.

At the time of this posting, I am attempting to find a workaround for international texting through third-party apps, but have had no success.  If you want to try Simcash for yourself, you can download it here (referral link).

There is another reason I'm here. I very recently started a website dedicated to becoming the largest trusted database of real, verified passive income and investment opportunities as well as known scam sites and organizations, and I am exploring several platforms on which to promote it. This is one of them.
