For the January Democratic Primary debate, 6 candidates have been announced, and they are: Sen. Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Tom Steyer. This is the final debate that will happen before the February 3rd Iowa Caucuses. The debate will be held by Des Moines Register and CNN on January 14 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, from 9 to 11 p.m. (EST).
Andrew Yang, who was on the December debate stage, will not be on the stage, not having met the polling requirements.
Senator Sanders is headed into the Iowa debates with a lot of momentum. A recent poll from Des Moines Register and CNN, who is hosting the debate, shows that Sen. Sanders has taken the lead in Iowa, with 20% of the vote, up +5% from the same poll in November, followed by Sen. Warren at 17%, a +1 increase, Pete Buttigieg at 16%, a -9% drop, and VP Biden at 15%, no change since November's poll.
Iowa is a caucus state, which if candidates don't reach the 15% threshold for delegates in precincts, the votes are distributed to the voter's second choice. This is bad news for Biden, since he is at 15%, which is right at the threshold, which there is a good chance which Biden may lose a lot of delegates if he isn't able to get 15% in each precinct.
Of those who will be on the debate stage, Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Tom Steyer do not reach near the 15% threshold for delegates, receiving 6% and 2% respectively, which does show how ridiculous the DNC's debate requirements are, considering Andrew Yang is polling ahead of Steyer and right with Sen. Klobuchar, receiving 5%. Though we all know how the DNC tries to prevent anti-establishment candidates off the debate stage.
