Bernie Sanders Gets Endorsed By The Sunrise Movement

Senator and Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders has received the highly sought after endorsement from the Sunrise Movement, an environmental organization dedicated to solving the existential crisis of Climate Change. After 6 weeks of deliberation among the group, the members of the Sunrise Movement who voted for a particular candidate to endorse, and with 76% of the vote, Sen. Bernie Sanders received the endorsement of the Sunrise Movement.

The Sunrise Movement released a scorecard for 2020 Democratic presidential candidates, which can be seen as a precursor to their recent endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders for president. Sen. Sanders receiving 183 points out of a possibly 200, the next closest was Senator Elizabeth Warren receiving 171 out of 200 points, and former Vice President Joe Biden receiving the lowest score 75 out of 200.

Sen. Sanders' commitment to the Green New Deal is what is likely to have swayed the Sunrise Movement to support his presidential campaign. Sen. Sanders has been steadily releasing his plans on how he would implement the Green New Deal if he were to be president, such as his legislation, the Green New Deal for Public Housing Act, which would invest $180 Billion into US public housing to implement the Green New Deal, de-carbonizing the over one million public housing units across the nation.

Sen. Sanders has been raising in the polls recently, even taking the lead in the Iowa Caucus and New Hampshire Primary in the Real Clear Politics Average, garnering 22% of the support in the Iowa Caucus and 21.5% support in the New Hampshire Primary as of January 9th, 2020. It is unknown how much this will impact the race, but in my opinion, having a grassroots movement of young people behind the Senator will certainly help his presidential campaign. Especially if this would get the youth vote mobilized, because Sen. Sanders is the preferred candidate among Millennial and Gen Z voters, keeping up the trend from 2016, when Sen. Sanders received more youth votes than Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and John Kasich combined.
