Now More Lost Than Yesterday
A Poem of Loneliness, Love, and Hope
I feel more lost than I did yesterday,
There is no place where my heart longs to stay.
Oh, this heart of mine, with nowhere to belong,
As if it has no one, no right, no wrong.
A silent sorrow sleeps within my chest,
A grief that years have never laid to rest.
It seems this house, where shadows softly creep,
Has nothing left but pain that will not sleep.
Each night I lay my head with hope anew,
Each dawn returns the grief I thought I knew.
I rise to find, beneath the skies above,
No shelter left but dreams of vanished love.
I am so tired of time's relentless wheel,
Of all the wounds that teach the heart to feel.
Upon life's pages, written line by line,
Are scars of sorrow, yours, and mine.
So many times I've smiled to hide my pain,
And worn a face untouched by wind or rain.
But tell me, has my weary face grown old
From carrying a grief too deep to hold?
If only someone knew the state I'm in,
The storms that rage beneath my silent skin.
For in my chest, where once a song would rise,
A thousand tears have learned to speak through sighs.
I stand beside a window, cold and bare,
And watch the night unfold its dark despair.
It seems this lonely street has lost its light,
And no one comes to share the silent night.
Each memory becomes a flame inside,
A fire from which there is nowhere to hide.
Within my quiet home, where shadows stay,
I search in vain for some escape away.
I told myself, “Forget the world's cruel ways,”
And tried to bury grief in passing days.
But every road that leads me from the past
Returns me to the pain that seems to last.
Whenever I have loved and given all,
I've watched my hopes grow fragile, fade, and fall.
I crossed the miles for those I held so dear,
Yet found so little faithfulness down here.
I am a garden built of memories,
Now dried beneath the autumn's bitter breeze.
Upon my barren branches, bare and still,
No bird returns to sing upon the hill.
Let rain descend; let silver rivers flow,
A heart needs more than rain to make it grow.
For even flowers cannot bloom in spring
When hope has lost the strength to take to wing.
I asked the window, “Has the morning come?
Has dawn returned to wake the world from numb?”
It answered, “No, the stars are veiled from sight;
The dark still holds the kingdom of the night.”
I asked the mirror, “Why have I grown old
Before my years have had their stories told?”
It said, “Your face bears witness to the years
You've spent concealing all your silent tears.”
I asked my shadow, “Will you walk with me?
How long must I endure this misery?”
It whispered, “On this road, through dark and blue,
While I remain, you'll never walk alone; I'm here with you.”
I tried to run away from who I'd been,
To leave the past, its sorrow, and its sin.
Yet when I turned and faced myself once more,
I found the self I'd left outside the door.
I spoke your name into the empty air,
As though your voice might answer from somewhere.
But only tears replied to what I said,
And silence laid its hand upon my head.
At last, I raised my eyes toward the sky,
And asked my God the questions burning nigh:
“My Lord, why is my share of life this way?
Why must I run and run, yet lose the day?
Why do I spend my strength to reach the sun,
Yet feel my journey's only just begun?
Why, when I've given love with open hands,
Does faithfulness escape my heart's commands?
Why does the kindness that I freely give
Return so rarely to the heart I live?
I'm tired of promises of some tomorrow,
When all I feel today is endless sorrow.
If there is healing for this heart of mine,
Please let me see a single hopeful sign.”
A gentle breeze came drifting from afar,
As though the heavens had awakened one small star.
A quiet voice seemed rising from the air,
As if to say that hope was waiting there.
It whispered, “Friend, the darkness is not all;
Not every shadow means the light must fall.
Beyond the blackest clouds that hide the skies,
A hidden dawn is waiting to arise.”
I asked, “Can this long night at last be through?
Can skies turn bright and dreams become anew?”
It answered, “Night will never reign forever;
The dawn returns, though darkness says it never.”
I asked, “Why do these wounds cut so profound?”
It said, “Because your heart has loved without a bound.
A heart that loves will sometimes learn to grieve;
It gives so much, and struggles to believe.”
I said, “My heart has turned to ruins, cold.”
It answered, “There are stories yet untold.
Within those walls, though broken, scarred, and bare,
A window waits to let the light come there.”
I asked, “Why will no flower bloom for me?”
It said, “The roots still hold what you can't see.
Beneath the earth, where nothing seems to grow,
The seeds of hope prepare for spring below.”
And in that moment, something changed in me;
I felt a door unlock, though I held no key.
I learned that even when the tears remain,
A hidden fire can live beneath the pain.
I am a drop, a little speck of blue,
Yet in my heart, the ocean lives there too.
And every wave that rises from the deep
Leaves traces on the shores we vow to keep.
Each wave we make will touch another shore;
Our smallest deeds may shape the world once more.
For what we build with kindness, truth, and care
Becomes a home that others too may share.
This world is not just sorrow, grief, and sighs;
A smile can bloom where one small tear still lies.
Sometimes, within the middle of our pain,
A little joy comes softly back again.
Sometimes the heart grows quiet, still, and deep,
And finds a thousand words it could not speak.
For silence is not empty, dark, or bare;
It holds the truths no spoken words can bear.
I may be more heartbroken than before,
Yet somewhere in my heart, there is a door.
A little light still trembles in the night,
A tiny flame that will not leave my sight.
Perhaps one day a stranger passing by
Will hear the quiet sorrow in my sigh.
Perhaps a hand will reach across the blue,
And offer me the kindness I once knew.
Perhaps upon this field of cracked and silent ground,
The clouds will gather, and the rain come down.
Perhaps the earth, so thirsty and so dry,
Will lift its face to meet a kinder sky.
Perhaps this pain will make my words take flight,
And turn my wounded soul toward the light.
Perhaps the scars that time has left on me
Will teach my heart what it was born to see.
I will not curse the turning wheel tonight,
Though countless grievances still cloud my sight.
For even in the ruins of my days,
A distant star may guide me through the haze.
I have learned that on this road of pain,
A loss may bring a freedom in its train.
And what we thought would break us in the end
May lead us to ourselves, our truest friend.
I am more lost than I was yesterday,
Yet still my heart has not turned life away.
This tale is breathing, though the night is long;
Its final page has not been written in song.
And if no hand should ever heal my scars,
I'll seek the strength that shines beyond the stars.
For even in a heart that's torn apart,
Love keeps a kingdom in its deepest part.
I stand beside the window once again,
Still carrying my sorrow and my pain.
Yet somewhere in the silence, faint and bright,
Love keeps a candle burning through the night.
O Life, if you can hear my whispered plea,
Leave just a little hope alive in me.
I ask for nothing grand, no wealth, no fame,
Just one warm dawn to call my own again.
Perhaps tomorrow hears tonight's lament;
Perhaps the tears are not in vainly spent.
Perhaps beyond the sorrow and the rain,
A field of flowers waits to bloom again.
I'm more lost than I was yesterday,
But I have not surrendered on the way.
My heart still beats; my story's not yet done—
The night is here, but still may rise the sun.
