Hot takes on the final debate

By cMasta | pmcmasta | 23 Oct 2020

The last US presidential debate of this election cycle ended earlier and I got to see the whole thing because it ended on time. So now I'm going to save you an hour and a half if you haven't seen it by reviewing it for you as impartially as I can.

Trump was on his game. He came off as calm, collected, and made-up. Surprisingly enough, Biden came off as pretty uninteresting, a little corny, and even slightly desperate at times. Towards the end of the debate, you could tell that Biden's anxiety had gotten to him because he started to stutter a little bit. Poor guy. He got caught up trying to defend his family from Trump's numerous blows regarding money that some of them allegedly obtained questionably. I understand that he had to, but I feel like he could have handled it better. Same as last time though. Unlike the incumbent, the former vice took a while to leverage some momentum. I also found it kind of funny when he told us that he saw beyond 'red and blue' but then proceeded to speak in terms of red and blue. To be fair, it's hard to not do that. And we should be acting like the United States.

We did hear Trump's mic being cut off early once, and to be fair, the media bias against him was evident, though not crippling by any means.

It was also evident during the COVID discussion that Mr. Trump contracted some personal growth along with the coronavirus, so that is a good thing regardless of what ends up happening. While he had a very good start, though, his control eventually faded, particularly in the last thirty minutes or so when there was a little more policy discussion. That was when the tides turned.

Both candidates drifted away from the race conversation when it came up, but Trump's departure was a little more pronounced. To his credit, he handled it about as well as we could have expected him to.

I will say that despite all the criticism Trump gets on his handling of foreign policy, he never took the nuclear war bait. In fact, one of Trump's merits, I believe, was as a peace maker with countries traditionally viewed as unfriendly with the USA. Of course Russia tried to meddle in the election. Countries do that all the time, including the US. Don't we know by now that avoiding online scams is just another trial of the 21st century?

That all being said, though, we mustn't forgo the civil unrest that festered and ultimately exploded under Trump and the 'trade war' with China that he, in less than three years, instigated and then lost miserably. I wonder how long it will take to mend US-China relations in the future. I'm still waiting for the trans-continental mag-railway, so that's kind of important because if anyone can lead the mag-railway campaign, it is definitely the Middle Kingdom. But I don't think China is too fond of the US right now, so that dream may be pushed off another decade or so. Sigh.

Addressing climate change, cleaning the planet, and switching to renewable energy are my biggest issues, personally, so of course I was happy that the debate ended on that note. Regardless of who you supported beforehand, I think it was evident that Biden blew his competitor out of the water at this point. He even handled fracking very reasonably. Let's hope he holds the industry accountable for their mess as he stated he would.

Then there was the look on Biden's face when Trump accused him of trying to raise taxes; his silent, "Yes, I am going to raise your goddamn taxes" face was kind of priceless. At that point, I was dreaming of Bernie at the podium saying, "Donald, it is kind of like socialized healthcare and that is the goddamn point."

Alas, it looks like no matter who wins, we may still be forced to choose from a handful of for-profit insurance scams.

Despite coming off as more personable, Trump did not come off as more presidential in the final 2020 debate. Former vice president Joe Biden performed adequately, but likely didn't impress anyone else.

I still need to fill out my ballot. You should do that too if you haven't yet. I'm voting for Joe.
