He is one of the most ridiculed men on the internet. Even the mainstream media did not spare him.
But contrary to the popular perception that he lacked vision, Hanyecz deserves to be celebrated as a true pioneer in the crypto world.
Why? Because he was the first person in the world to conduct a real-world transaction using Bitcoin.
On May 22, 2010, Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas from Papa John’s. At the time, this transaction was worth only $41.
In the crypto community, May 22 is now celebrated as ‘Bitcoin Pizza Day’, commemorating the first tangible use of Bitcoin as currency.
Mocking Hanyecz is like ridiculing someone who sold a handful of rare, precious seeds that had never been sown before. The seller, understanding their potential, sold them to a farmer who cultivated and nurtured them. The farmer went on to reap billions from the harvest.
Some might say, “If the seller had known their true worth, he would never have sold them.” But this perspective misses the bigger picture. The seller’s goal wasn’t to hoard the seeds but to prove their potential to the world. Without that first step, those seeds might have remained unused, and their value unrealised.
Similarly, Hanyecz didn’t just spend Bitcoin—he demonstrated its potential as a real currency, paving the way for the cryptocurrency revolution we are witnessing today.
Let’s give him his due credit.
Laszlo Hanyecz took the first step so others could dream big.
