Why is an old Caucasian guy investing so much time on what is a central icon in the Chinese culture? From age five until nine I was essentially raised by an old couple who had just escaped China's civil war. Once extremely rich they were now working as servants. Ah Soo looked after me and Ah loo was our family cook. Both my parents had government jobs so my early years were mostly spent with that wonderful and gracious lady. Believe it or not, as a child, Ah Soo had been bound, preventing her feet from growing. Painful then and painful for her as we explored Hong Kong together. She could go anywhere and everyone respected her.
Lunar New Year is a big deal for billions of people around the world and the Lion Dance is an essential part of the celebration. Every year I would be enveloped in the colors and sounds of the dance. The firecrackers, gongs and dancing Lions were so exciting.
This never ending Covid pandemic has become a source of despair for many, but I do believe the end is in sight. 2022 has just got to be better. This years Lunar New Year is on February 1, the second month of 2022. (all these 2s).
My Lion Dance graphic represents an angry lion determined to overcome the malaise many of us are experiencing. To me it is a symbol of defiance and strength.
