Vitalik in Heated Debate on Blockchain Patents

By author_nan | News | 24 Apr 2020

Vitalik Buterin has taken a jab at the Bitcoin SV (BSV) project and its supporters, tweeting on April 23 that blockchain patents do not correspond with an understanding of the technology.

Buterin was speaking with reference to Craig Wright’s frequent statements on the number of blockchain patents nChain has, of which 50 to 100 have been granted. The patent filings themselves are somewhat questionable, as the patents lay claim to technologies used by many other projects.

This resulted in BSV proponent Calvin Ayre responding to Buterin, where he went as far as to say that the Ethereum co-founder didn’t understand blockchains and that Ethereum’s technology had been used for more scams than any other,

Buterin, whose words and opinions are often held in high regard in the cryptocurrency community, is not one to shy away from criticizing Wright and the Bitcoin SV project, having done so many times in the past. He responded to Ayre’s tweet by talking about the scalability issues of Bitcoin SV, and from there it simply turned into an ugly spat that involved numerous supporters of both camps.

Wright had filed a lawsuit against Buterin in April 2019 for a GitHub repository that Buterin had made that the latter said contained evidence that Wright was not Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto. The case did proceed further than the initial letter sent to Buterin.

Meanwhile, Wright is currently experiencing his own struggle to prove his identity as Nakamoto, whom he adamantly claims to be. The Wright vs. Kleiman case, filed in the U.S. District Court of Southern Florida, saw Judge Beth Bloom ordered Wright turn over 11,000 pages of documentation, and that attorney-client privilege, which was the basis for Wright’s objection, would not suffice.
