Former Canadian PM: Bitcoin Could Possibly Be a Reserve Currency

By Abhimanyu Krishnan | News | 18 Jan 2021

Former Canadian PM Stephen Harper, who led the country between 2006 and 2015, said in an interview with Cambridge House on Jan. 17 that it was possible that Bitcoin and CBDCs could replace the dollar as a reserve currency.

  • Harper was interviewed by Cambridge House’s Jay Martin during the Vancouver Resource Investment Conference
  • He believes that both Bitcoin and CBDCs could replace the US dollar and that CBDCs were “inevitable”, even if in a limited form
  • On the Euro and Yuan, Harper said that long term uncertainty and the Chinese government's actions concerning the Yuan prevented both from being reliable reserves
  • Harper tentatively supports digital currencies as a way to tackle inflation, but is concerned if it is a "wild experiment" that is attempting to replace central banking
  • Canada is also working on its own CBDC, following in the wake of governments and institutions like China, France, Australia and the European Central Bank
