Changes at SEC in the past 30-days
It's no secret the Trump administration hit the ground running on inauguration day with impact all across the US Government. Here's a recap of what's changed at just the SEC over that timeframe.
Name Changes
Over the past three (3) years the SEC has had numerous names for their Crypto task forces including:
- Cyber Unit - This could be an amazing joke, but I digress from my childish ways
- which morphed to Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit
- to Cyber and Emerging Technologies Unit (most notable is the removal of 'Crypto' from the name)
Leadership
Gary Genslar was widely successful at Crypto enforcement and has been replaced with Paul Atkins, who has not yet been ratified by Congress via PN12-18. This may not happen until April or May of this year given prior year nomination and voting timeline precedence. I don't expect any issues as Paul is very highly qualified and will bring fresh ideas to help bring more capital to these markets.
SEC Crypto Policy
Under Gary's watch the SEC failed to put together a crypto policy, he deftly deferred that to Congress. Under Acting Chair Ayuda she is drawing clear regulatory frameworks and regulatory lines.
Summary
Major shifts in leadership, policy development and approach will reshape America's vision and potential leadership across the globe. Time will tell how beneficial it is to foster growth versus only providing stifling regulations and punishment. I expect more changes before years end at the SEC, don't you?
