Like fire on a tree - Velvet shank

By madventure | Nature, Photography | 24 Jan 2024

It is an underestimated or perhaps overlooked species of winter edible mushroom by many. When there is no snow, it is difficult to see it among the trees and still colorful leaves.

But as soon as a little snow falls, it can spot it, often on trees, or on boughs and fallen branches.

The mushroom is orange-yellow, reddish, sometimes brown-yellow in color, with a cap reaching up to 10 cm in diameter.

When young, the cap has a convex shape, but with age it opens up and becomes almost flat. The surface of the cap is smooth, and during rain or snow it becomes slippery, shiny and becomes covered with sticky mucus.

The gills are white, but darken with age. The characteristic feature of this mushroom is its stem. It has a velvety color which turns brown or even black the closer it is to the root.

The mushroom has a delicate taste and smell, slightly spicy and is a valued culinary ingredient in the kitchen. Its white, cultured counterparts can be found in stores around the world.
