The flesh is lemon yellow in color, and turns blue when pressed. It has a slightly bitter and unpleasant taste and smell.

It is a species of mushroom that is under strict protection in Poland. It is a rare and dying species.

Mainly found in southern Europe in mainly deciduous forests on calcareous soils. It is thermophilic, so it is rarely found in the mountains. It appears in summer and can be found until autumn.

The cap of this mushroom can reach up to 20 cm in diameter. The young fruiting body is semicircular, cushion-shaped, becomes convex with age, with a protruding edge. The surface of the hat is leathery, whitish, brown-gray in color. The peel is cracked and turns blue, bluish when pressed.

The pores are pale citrine in color, then turn olive yellow, also discolor when pressed.

The leg can be up to 13 cm high and even 5 cm thick. The shape of the leg is bulging bulbous, becoming cylindrical with time. The color of the leg is slightly yellowish, sometimes with a delicate fine mesh.

It is not a poisonous mushroom, but its bitter taste and unpleasant smell mean that it has no culinary uses. It can be confused with another boletus of a similar structure and color, namely the yellow-breasted boletus (Boletus calopus), which is partially distinguished by its red-colored stem.
