With the advent of computer and the subsequent boom of the internet superhighway. The world that seems so big and so far apart became small that conversation from someone on the other end comes from less to no delays at all. With this follows the new ways of how people around the world do their work or new ways of doing work. It is apparent that a lot of companies from progressive or well developed countries mostly from the western world tap into the power of outsourcing.
With it I've listed to what I think the pros and cons in being a freelancer or choosing a freelancing career. We`ll have the Pros first.
Pros of being a freelancer:
- You Are Your Own Boss.
As a freelance agent you are the master of ship. There is no one who has their eyes on you, observing you on a constant basis. - Daily Commute Is Not Your Problem.
Since remote work doesn't require you to report to an office. You can work at the comfort of your home. - You Can Wake-Up At Anytime You Want.
Being a freelancer some of the projects you might work with doesn't require you to report at a specific time and perhaps all that matter is for you to show/submit the expected results. - You Can Work At Anytime You Want.
This is in connection from the one above. Since some of the projects doesn't requires for you to work at specific time of the day. - You Can Work Any Place You Want.
As long as you have you laptop with you that is able to perform the necessary task or has the capability of performing the work needed. As well as you still be able to connect to the internet. - Having To Choose For A Work Attire Isn't A Problem.
Since there is no need for you to report to an office wearing casual attire or wearing those that you usually wear at home isn't a problem. - Your Earning Potential Is Unlimited.
This only applies to the skills you can offer to the market. Other skills pay not as much as the others. - You Can Save Huge Amounts.
This comes a no brainer since you can cut multiple expenses from your daily commute, choosing/buying an attire etc. - You Can Have It As A Side Gig.
This is the most advisable approach to freelancing. Have it as just a side gig apart from your regular job.
Now with the cons of freelancing:
- Earnings Are Flexible.
As a freelancer your earnings are of flexible type. This could be an advantage that if you are earning way beyond your expense. That your earnings can more than compensate your needs for living. - You Have To Be Jack Of More Than One Trade To Stay Afloat.
As a freelancer you can't somehow stay confident at learning one skill. You've got to learn other facets of things on how it is done. So that it can serve as your edge from other service providers. - Competition Is Very Tough.
The competition in the freelance market is very tough indeed since the scope is worldwide. Much more for those newcomers into it. - Most Doesn't Comes With Social And Health Benefits.
This is straightforward, most of the freelancing contracts you'll get doesn't comes with it the package of social and health benefits offered by the regular jobs/work. - Your Contract Is Floating.
What this means is that there is no binding agreement between you and your employer that the contract won't be terminated/dissolved for no apparent reasons at all and that you can somehow sue or get the help of a labor department if you see that they somehow violated it. In simple terms your contract can be terminated anytime possible. #SAD - There Is No Security Of Tenure.
With freelancing the word "security of tenure" is such a very rare one to find.
