Naturally, Donald Trump's sharing of an image of Pope Trump, produced by artificial intelligence, on the White House account as if mocking Francis, known as the Pope of the oppressed, received a lot of backlash. The Catholic world had not even completed its 9-day official mourning period yet, and the parodying of the loss of a beloved spiritual leader turned into a flood of anger towards Trump. There was no hostility towards Jesus, no irreligion; no inhumanity, no devilry. And they were right in their own way.
However, it had already been determined by many experts that Trump was a person who lacked empathy and had psychopathological problems. A book compiled by Dr. Bandy X. Lee from Yale University and commented on by 27 different psychiatrists and mental health experts focused on the diagnosis of "dangerously pathological narcissism"; in addition, his characteristics such as antisocial personality tendencies, paranoid thought structure, and delusionality were mentioned. The American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Goldwater rule, known as the principle of not making a diagnosis about a public figure without a personal examination, was violated in the case of Trump, and the "duty to warn" principle was activated due to the great dangers that a "malignant narcissist" could pose to the world and the American people.
While psychiatrists debate Trump's narcissism, personality disorder, and sociopathy, the issue that really interests political scientists is that such a personality was elected to the head of a country defined as the world's greatest power with over 77 million votes. What happened to these people?
Sigmund Freud says that political leaders who stand out with their charismatic personalities are a reflection of the unconscious desires of the masses and that they identify with the masses deep down because they represent the people's repressed impulses and desires. This is also a definition that is in line with Max Weber's statement that charismatic leadership is "a response to society's desire for change." A leader does not emerge spontaneously; When society thinks it has collapsed, it seeks salvation and gives birth to a leader from within itself who will be its mirror. Indeed, Trump is essentially the response of the American people to uncertainty, collapse, and the loss of its victorious identity and first place among equals.
Although the 20th century is known as the century of the United States, which triumphantly ended both world wars and the Cold War that followed, it is well known that the 21st century is not like that. While the world is talking about the rise of China, the disintegration of Europe and the Transatlantic Alliance, Russia's military expansion, new geopolitical alliances, trade corridors, monetary and payment systems, destructive technologies and the end of globalization, the public perception that American leadership has produced nothing more than rhetoric and the chaos created in neighboring countries is also quite strong.
We are talking about the collapse not only of global leadership, but also of the system, regimes and institutions that have been institutionalized around that leadership. It seems that we are before a new birth and the masses are aware of this. All over the world, newly rising leaderships and management approaches are being questioned by the old elites, intellectuals and politicians for this very reason. There is a new birth, but unfortunately the baby looks a bit like Lucifer.
In Roman Latin culture, Lucifer was a concept that was not negatively associated with the star that shines before sunrise, but on the contrary, it was identified with light and brightness; it was the name of the planet Venus. However, the medieval church, since it was an institution that sanctified darkness in a sense, preferred to interpret this light as the devil descending to earth.
Since the fact that innovations and challenges to the old are generally met with anxiety by the masses is also shaped by the narratives loaded into the subconscious and collective memories, the leadership approach symbolized by Trump and the new world are portrayed as frightening and full of evil. In fact, Trump and his team do not refrain from implementing any nonsense that will confirm this concern. On the one hand, he salutes authoritarianism through symbols, rituals and ceremonies that remind us of Hitler's arrival, on the other hand, he builds a new value system with his rich real estate agent profile that excludes people and human values in the Gaza and Ukraine issues; on the other hand, he does not hesitate to make fun of the mourning and spirituality of hundreds of millions by taking on the role of comedian after the death of the Pope. Moreover, in this very way, he manages to hold a mirror up to the suppressed instincts and dark world of humanity that remain hidden in the subconscious.
Shortly before the Pope Trumpis photo he shared on his official account, Trump had answered the question "who would you like to see as Pope" that he was his number one choice. Why not? After all, he was not the first Lucifer to sit in that chair.
