Spanish Alphabet: pronunciation of the letters C and G

If you are starting to learn the Spanish alphabet, it means that you are most likely trying to master the language from scratch.

Spanish Alphabet

There are 27 letters in the Spanish language. Don’t be surprised if some sources or lessons tell you that there are actually 29 letters in the Spanish alphabet. Previously, the digraphs “ch” and “ll” were considered full-fledged letters, but we will be guided by the information published on the website of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language, which states that these two letter combinations have been definitively excluded from the list of letters.

The Spanish alphabet consists of 5 vowels (letras vocales) and 22 consonants (letras consonantes).

“C, c”: the letter that requires special attention is “c”. In many Latin American countries, there is no difference between “s” and “c”, but in the continental version, “c” is pronounced like the English sound [th] in the words “think”, “thin”, etc. Another feature of this letter is that it can convey two sounds – [th] and [k], depending on the vowel that follows. If it is followed by “a”, “o”, “u”, then the letter is read as “k” (cacao, coco, cuanto). If “e”, “i” , then it is read as “th” (cero, cinco).

“G, g”: The letter “g”, like “c”, has different sounds depending on the vowel that follows it. It is pronounced as the sound [g] before “a”, “o”, “u” (gallo, gota, gusano) and consonants; as the guttural sound [h] before “e” and “i” (gente, girasol).

In this article, I wanted to talk about these two letters, which are pronounced differently depending on the capital letter that follows it. That's all.
