A prelude on the hymn tune "Zwar ist solche Herzensstube", firmly rooted in D Lydian (D Major with a sharpened subdominant [fourth] degree, i.e. D major with a G♯) with its characteristic bright and diaphanous quality. The chorale melody (as cantus firmus) appears as a canon at the fifth, begun in the pedals and answered in the right hand; between statements of the cantus firmus the feet freely rhapsodize, while the left hand embarks upon two-part quasi-canonic imitation throughout, with motivic material often derived from the cantus firmus. This culminates in a sweetly tranquil coda, the hands given lines consisting of double-dotted rhythmic figures, while the feet sustain a double pedal point on D (re-affirming the work's D Lydian tonality).
