Sixth in a set of virtuosic "novelettes" for solo celesta. In this "whirlwind caprice", pellucid sections of toccata-like filigree frame a far more austere fugue the subject of which derives from motifs hidden within the preceding virtuoso passagework. The substantial central fugue itself, only briefly interrupted by an eruption of the initial filigree, displays developmental-variation characteristics as well as typical fugal qualities, in that the fugue subject gradually though perceptibly transforms beyond the techniques of inversion, retrograde, retrograde inversion, diminution, and augmentation typically associated with fugal counterpoint. The coda arrives after a partial recapitulation of the opening section and at first extends the virtuosic whirlwind further. At the very close of the work, the fugue briefly returns, leading into a sudden evocation of carillon overtones (in a final metamorphosed statement of the fugue subject) and a concluding virtuosic gesture. The painting in the video is "Marine: The Waterspout" by Gustave Courbet.
