Noveletten für Celesta: IV. Das Traumbild der Spieldosen [Philip Daniel; 2020]

By PhilipDaniel | Musica Melopoetica | 20 May 2021

Fourth in a set of virtuosic "novelettes" for solo celesta. Though the title translates to "the dream-image of the music box," this work is not programmatic per se, except insofar as its textures, sonorities, and harmonies invoke the faded memory of some antique music box. The work grows rhapsodically out of a series of opening motifs, the texture thickening into exotic harmonies, leading to a final passage comprised of an accelerando intensification, followed by a ritardando "reduction", and, finally, a C# major tonic with a suspended second (the enharmonic of D♭ major that ends the Kleine Tanzszene, fifth in this set of pieces). The painting in the video is "A Dream of a Girl Before a Sunrise" by Karl Bryullov.
