Noveletten für Celesta: III. Canzone istriana [Philip Daniel; 2020]

By PhilipDaniel | Musica Melopoetica | 19 May 2021

Third in a set of virtuosic "novelettes" for solo celesta. A languorous song without words, interposing more lyrical passages with freer recitative-like "stanzas", steadily building in intensity and passion to a cryptic conclusion. Though inspired by the folk dance and song of Istria (a territory divided amongst present-day Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy), by no means does this work express anything but a stylized impression of this folk music tradition, manifested by the unusual 15/8 meter and the prevalent exploitation of the properties of the so-called "Istrian scale" or "Istrian hexachord" [a six-note series comprised of the first six pitches of the half-step whole-step octatonic symmetric scale, here (often simultaneously) used in numerous transpositions]. The painting in the video is "Landscape by Moonlight" by Jules Dupré.
