First in a set of virtuosic "novelettes" for solo celesta. A sectional toccata, this evokes, alongside the clang of bells (hence the "carillonica" in the title), the quasi-improvisational idiom of the (17th-18th century) "stylus phantasticus", albeit with a harmonically more "advanced" language (featuring extended, often chromatically saturated triadic and quartal / quintal harmonies). Mischievous fanfares, alternating dramatic rhetorical statements, and virtuosic figuration, enclose more esoteric fugal sections that develop a theme derived from a motive introduced in one of the first section's inner voices. The momentous energy accumulated in the course of the toccata evanesces in the form of a sensuous polychord taking advantage of the uniquely delicate timbre of the celesta.
