As you can read in Wikipedia, he is recognized for the quality of his writings and the depth of his social and moral thoughts, earning him the nickname "The Master of Speech" or "The Wordsmith” simply "Master” among Persian scholars. He has been quoted in the Western traditions as well. His famous book has been ranked as one of the 100 greatest books of all time by The Guardian.

Saadi and A Love Having You on The Hook

In Iran, everybody knows how Saadi is but his poems are not actually very popular because they are very literate, and people like love songs not words of advice!

Anyway, I found a music-song based on one of Saadi’s poems, with a love theme:

Saadi and A Love Having You on The Hook

The poem strangely describes a love, that finds its way to a person and won’t let go. Others advising the subject of love to just let go of it and stop the pain, but it is too late when you love someone, you are under their spell… they have you on their hook (Gholab). Saadi’s word has very metaphors and the love he is describing is most likely a metaphor for divine love.

Singer: Homayoun Shajarian

Song: Gholab

She has me on the hook

She has me on the hook

She has me on the gook

...

I am extremely thirsty!

Beyond words!

Cup-bearer! Bring me that water (The metaphor for wine or the elixir of love)

Saadi and A Love Having You on The Hook

First, satisfy my thirst!

Then give the water to the companions

I can’t sleep anymore at night as well!

Pinning over the loss of the beloved ones

I’ve told goodbye to sleep (insomnia)

 once and for all

No one knows the value of a real sweetheart

As much as someone like me!

Only the fish that has fallen on the ground

knows the value of water

They say!

Saadi! You are suffering from this sweetheart! , stay away!

O fool! Do you think I'm going on my own?

She has me on the hook!

She is the one who pulls the hook!

She has me on the hook …

She has me on the hook …

She has me on the hook …
