"Better dead than that!" A funeral on the road, around a hill full of graves and crosses, a mysterious night, a roar of frogs, wild eyes known from a poster, a weird "preacher" stopping the carriage. Tension is with spectator from the first minutes and unnecessary speech does not dilute the story. The horror motif intersects with the drama motif, where a scorned suitor wants to thwart future marriage and win the bride. Lugosi plays with his eyes and the accent doesn't matter at all, it sounds rather exotic and mysterious compared to the more perfect English ones. The scene of a drunken desperate husband with dancing shadows is great, but it is no such quality like in horror Vampyr of the same year. The zombies don‘t bite and the blood doesn’t splatter yet, but the film will still delight with its mysterious atmosphere of entertaining B-horror. The impression is spoiled by the scraping of logic, where there is plenty of room for both sides to destroy each other, and that spoils the previously built tension.

Silent / Sound: Sound.
Plot: Young couple in high social class come to Haiti to marry each other in the house of their friend. But happy love is disrupted by intrigues and dark powers.
Horror: Zombies do not bite people but you can be satisfied with horror atmosphere. No exploitation, no blood, only night, magic and darkness can you frighten.
Romance: Relationships are not complex or complicated and do not have their time and space in this movie, because the movie is primarily horror. In the movie is depicted love between man and woman who love each other and want to marry each other. But this relationship is disrupted by other men who want the woman for themselves. Not so much drama like Marriage Story but for atmosphere and story is necessary.

Story: Quite satisfied. Movie has a simple story that doesn't surprise much the spectator. The story is such as you expect in B movies. Logic in the story is not satisfactory, the characters leave a few loose ends of their problems, which their opponents can take the advantage of.
Actors: I am satisfied with their performances. Most excellent is Bela Lugosi, notorious known for his role Dracula, who gave scenes his best and scenes with him are the best too. All actors had makeup in their faces, men too.

Conclusion: 4/10. Necessary to see for early horror fans and Bela Lugosi fans. Pros: Lugosi and atmosphere. Cons: zombies, non complex characters and not satisfactory logic.
