Canada's new Prime Minister, Mark Carney is set to call a snap election set for April 28 later today as he is expected to visit the Governor General Mary Simon at the G.G.'s official residence at Rideau Hall to request dissolution of Canada's 44th Parliament and issue writs for Canada's next election.
Mark Carney has only been Prime Minister for 10 days, after Justin Trudeau finally bent to the will of the people and resigned. Carney will run for suburban Ottawa riding of Nepean. At present, Carney does not hold a seat and was elected Prime Minister by members of the Liberal Party only. While Carney is not the first to achieve the post in this manner (See John Turner, PM June to September 1984), he is the first to become Prime Minister without ever having held a seat in the House of Commons.
Carney has made a name for himself as a banker, having spent 13 years working at Goldman Sachs after which he joined the Bank of Canada. By 2008, he was the bank's governor. After a 5 year stint at the BoC, he got the job as head of the Bank of England, becoming the first non-British person to hold the title. After almost 7 years, he quit the post in 2020.
Shortly before leaving his post at the BoE, he took on the role of U.N. Special Envoy For Climate Action And Finance, encouraging investments in net-zero emissions. In other words, he was all in on adding a carbon charge tax on Canadian citizens, claiming that being 'low-carbon' would help Canada be more competitive.
Yet, on his first day on the job as PM, his very first decree was to cancel the carbon tax, which he advised Justin Trudeau to implement in the first place. It's all to obvious that this move is just an election ploy.
As for Canada's carbon emissions at 582 million tons (2022), this pales in comparison to China's emissions, coming in at 12.7 billion tons of CO2. In fact, China is the worst offender, coming in at almost 3 times that emitted by the U.S.A. total 4.85 billion tons.
So Canada's CO2 emissions are negligible compared to China and the U.S.A. but our dear leaders thought it was a good idea to de-industrialize us while China rises by charging us a bogus carbon tax. Canada has long winters. Most people heat their homes with natural gas. A carbon charge was applied to our heating bills. To make matter worse, the harmonized sales tax (13% HST in Ontario) was applied to the carbon charge! We were told this was good for us. We were saving the environment.
So, here we are today. With one of the architects of the carbon tax now running for re-election to head Canada's 45th Parliament. I remember an old saying... Never trust the banks. That also includes the bankers themselves and Carney is one of them.
Come election day, vote wisely, my fellow Canadians.
