What is tennis?
Tennis is a sport where the intention is to hit a tennis ball over a net and that the ball will land within the lines of the court's half. You win a point if your opponent:

  • cannot return the ball
  • hits the ball
  • the ball enters the opponent's net

HOW MANY TYPES OF GAMES ARE THERE IN TENNIS?
In tennis you play either singles and doubles.

WHAT GAME SITUATIONS DO YOU HAVE TO MAKE IN TENNIS?
Within tennis you almost always have to deal with the following game situations:

  • Service or storage (this can be 1st or 2nd service)
  • Returning service
  • Baseline game (play from the baseline)
  • Running up to net / playing at the net
  • Play against the net player

WHAT GOALS ARE PLAYING IN THE TENNIS?
In tennis you always hit the ball for a certain purpose. This can be:

  • To score
  • To build up to score (build a point)
  • To prevent your opponent from scoring
  • To provoke your opponent
  • To play a neutral ball

WHAT KIND OF STROKES DO YOU HAVE IN TENNIS?
In tennis there are a number of strokes which occur frequently, namely:

  • The forehand
  • The backhand
  • The service (1st and 2nd)
  • The smash
  • The volley

WHAT ARE LEVEL DETERMINING FACTORS?
Level determining factors are defined as guidelines for tennis teachers. If a player has a good command of the first factor (Steadiness), then the player may proceed to the next (Precision). For example, a beginner has difficulty with steadiness while a pro player can camouflage his shots very well very well. The level determining factors are listed from easy to difficult as follows:

  • Steadiness
  • Precision
  • Velocity
  • Variation
  • Rotation
  • Anticipation
  • Field coverage
  • Play under pressure
  • Tempo
  • Camouflage
