Neurogenic shock is a type of shock caused by, you guessed, the nervous system.
In Neurogenic Shock, the Sympathetic nervous system lessens, and the parasympathetic nervous system is intact. The imbalance causes vasodilation, hypotension (low blood pressure) and bradycardia (low heart rate).
Venous return, stroke volume, cardiac output and therefore available oxygen to cells is all decreased. Bad news.
It can also cause Autonomic Reflexia.
The usually occurs with an injury at T 6 or above.
With Autonomic Reflexia, the autonomic nervous system goes berserk and results in Hypotension, Bradycardia, and PINK AND DRY SKIN.
So now you know.
