Cataracts – Do I have them, can I avoid them

Cataracts are the opacification of the lens inside your eye. Untreated they will cause you to become blind. They occur as the lens in the eye ages and becomes damaged by UV and blue light. The lens slowly thickens becomes less transparent and eventually becomes completely opaque.

Cataracts are not preventable but you can delay the onset by using sunglasses outdoors, by using blue light blocking spectacle lenses whenever using a computer, phone or tablet. Even if you don’t require a vision correction your Optometrist can prescribe Blue light blocking lenses to protect you.

These lenses may also help protect your macula, allowing you to see well for many years to come. If your concerned that you may have cataracts your Optometrist can quickly and effectively examine your eyes and advise if you do.
