Video Killed the Radio Star, an 80s song by The Buggles. OR IS IT?

"Video Killed the Radio Star", one of the most recognizable tunes from the 80s, was a song by The Buggles.
We all know that.
But what if I tell you that the first statement is almost completely wrong?
Follow me in this brief article, and you'll find out how and why!

The song was originally co-written by Bruce Woolley and the two soon-to-be Buggles Trevor Horn and Geoffrey Downes in 1978, recorded the first time before September 1979 by Woolley and his band The Camera Club, and finally included in their first (and last) album "English Garden".

If you never heard of this version, the first listening can be described as "surprising" and "confusing" at the same time: imagine the Buggles' hit, but rearranged in a late 70s pop rock flavor; this would be the perfect description if it wasn't for the fact that the Camera Club version came first.
It was then reworked to have the trademark synth jingle, the female vocals (the legendary oh-a oh-a), it was slowed down a little bit and became the masterpiece we all know and love.

While technically speaking the song is from the 70s, it musically belongs to the 80s: here you can find all the defining characteristics of that decade, like the wide usage of electronic synth, a recognizable kick drum sound and even the record cover design.

As many of you know, one of the fact that made this song become immortal is that its video clip was used by MTV (when it still was a MUSIC television channel) as their very first video aired ever, on August 1st 1981 at 12:01 AM, and on February 27th 2000 it was chosen to be the one-millionth video aired by the channel.

Needless to say, the song was a worldwide hit, reaching #1 place in UK, Italy, France and many more.

So, in the end, Video Killed the Radio Star was an 80s song form 1979, and was by The Buggles despite the fact it wasn't.

But this doesn't matter because it will forever be one of the best songs in the world.
