Have you ever heard a piece of music and without knowing the meaning behind it, just wept? This piece of music is one of a very few that has had that effect upon me, and me being me, I had to find out some more about it.
Oswaldo Golijov wrote this piece of music, Mariel (played here beautifully on Marimba by Greg Samek and cello by Mathisha Panagoda) in memory of the death of a dear friend. It was written to express those precious moments before grief takes hold, those moments before he found out she had passed away. The thing with grief is that once it strikes, nothing is ever the same again. You get through the worst of it, you grow and adapt and gain coping mechanisms, but you never go back to the person you once were, in which you could rely somehow on the presence of the person you have lost and still love. So, it makes sense that this piece is about those moments just before, in which you sense there is about to be a shift, in your world, but are unclear of what it is or will mean.
It's a long piece but if you have 10 minutes and love beautiful music (I accept that's a point of perspective), then stick your headphones on and give it a listen.
