The 'if you can dream it you can do it' mindset is at least half BS, but the truth is in the middle

I was getting on a bus today, something I do almost daily, and two women stepped on the bus right behind me.

They were alike, in some aspects.

Unlike me, they were both locals, maybe not from the same town but definitely from the same country.

They both had dark hair, dark eyes, a small nose e thin lips, and a face that's either unremarkable or pretty, depending on who you ask.

They were both wearing eyeglasses.

They were the same ago, too. Or least same generation. Two or three years might have covered them both. Early 30s, maybe mid-30s.

The bottom line is they could've been in school together.

But if that school had a volleyball team or a basketball team, it would've been clear how the (one) (key) difference between them significantly outweighed all the other things they might have had in common.

I said they vaguely looked alike, but only from the neck up.

One was tall and long-limbed, maybe 180 or 185 (6' to 6'1'') and slim. One of those naturally slim people that could eat pizza twice a day every day for a year and still keep a single-digit body fat percentage, or close to it.

If she had played volleyball at school, she'd have been a spiker. If she had played basketball, she'd have been a shooting guard or a small forward.

Meanwhile, the other woman had a condition, almost certainly one she was born with, and she could walk on her own, but that's about it.

She was unnaturally short, with a regular-sized torso and regular head but very short, bent legs. I've no idea what that's called, but you don't need to be a doctor to be able to tell that's a medical condition of some kind.

If they'd been at the same school, she couldn't have played basketball or volleyball.

The harsh reality is that these two women did absolutely nothing to be born one way or the other. The tall one didn't choose to be tall. The short one didn't choose to be short. No one chooses to be born, and no one chooses to be born tall, short, healthy, unhealthy.

So the 'if you can dream it, you can do it', 'just work harder' mindset is sometimes utter BS.

And actually, conditions aside, height is an underrated natural advantage or disadvantage. You can work on your weight and other things, but there's nothing you can do about your height.

If your dream is to make it to the NBA, being seven foot tall is a huge advantage. If your dream is to become a MotoGP rider or even a Formula 1, being seven foot tall means that's never going to happen for you. Not in a million years. No matter how 'hard' you work.

Obviously, these are examples at the limits. It's not always black or white. We've seen NBA stars that are under 6 feet and F1 stars that are over 6 feet.

But the bottom line is no, not 'everything' is possible. But you can still do something about it.

Let's stick with basketball because I think that's a good example. I'm not tall, and I'm not a gifted player, and to be honest I never care much for basketball - there are other sports I like better - but if I absolutely wanted to make a living with basketball, there would've been options.

I could've trained more and become good enough to at least be a high-school coach or something, or a match analyst, or I could social media work for a basketball team, or create content myself like people do with basketball challenges, and the list goes on.

The problem with what I just said is that people, I don't know why, are often incapable of thinking 'in grey'. As in, everything is either black or white.

People either think that pure luck plays such a huge part that it's not even worth trying - which is BS - or they think that anything and everything is always possible for everyone and anyone always - and that's also BS.

It's like tea and coffee. You are allowed to prefer one over the other, but you're also free to say you 'like both'. It's allowed, you know.
