I know a lot of people love to hate Ryanair but the low-cost carrier pioneered a way of travelling that made it possible for millions of people to travel cheaply.

For my parents' generation - we don't have to go that far in the past - a weekend getaway to Paris or London or Barcelona would've been a luxury treat.

For us, it's just a regular weekend thing.

Not only that, Ryanair pioneered a business model that (initially) removed a lot of things we realised we could've done away with.

My favourite piece of trivia is Ryanair's lack of seat backpockets. It's a simple move, but it saves the company a fortune in cleaning fees every year.

But it feels like that's over now.

For years, we've enjoyed the opportunity to travel from to A to B very cheaply. But rising fuel prices and other elements are making that quite difficult.

In the future, a sub-$100 return fare will be a thing of the past.

I personally have ruthlessly taken advantage of this opportunity. I don't see why not. Most of my best memories are connected to something I've done or more importantly someone I've met while travelling.

And I'll still keep on travelling. But I guess budgeting will be harder. Pity.
