If all else fails, I'll be a people connector

First of all, there are two references - two Easter Eggs if you like - in the headline.

Connecting people, as in Nokia. And people connector as a job title. Like reacher (that's how the author of Jack Reacher came up with the name), and Catcher in the Rye - if you haven't read that book, you must read it.

If all else fails, maybe I can build a career as a people connector.

I'm generally terrible at everything, but there are a few exceptions. A few things I'm good at.

I'm very good at looking good in an airport. People at airports often look like they just got out of bed, I look like a star.

I'm also very, very good at scrounging. Getting free stuff is a talent, and I'm good at that.

I'm also good with languages, but mostly I'm good at socializing. Very good at socialising. I'm probably the best person I know at socialising.

Being good at socialising also means being good at 'networking', as people call it.

But, for now, other people are reaping those particular rewards, not me.

This week alone, I helped four people find more work. And didn't get anything out of it other than a couple of 'thank yous'. Which I'm glad about, but let me explain.

Last month, a man - let's call him Man With Silly Name - asked me to get him in touch with a friend of mine - we shall call her Person With Name That Incidentally Means Something That Triggers Alarms for a job opportunity.

When somebody uses the words 'job' and 'opportunity' in the same sentence, my bulls*it-meter goes off the scale, and also Man With Silly Name is on the wrong side of 50, while Person With Name That Incidentally Means Something That Triggers Alarms is 23.

So my first reaction was: "yeah, right".

But I did some digging and he was serious about it, and Person With Name That Incidentally Means Something That Triggers Alarms was interested in the opportunity, and so I made it happen.

Earlier today, I got confirmation that her first paid assignment is coming up, and it's serious business, nothing sinister. Good.

Then there's the other thing.

Earlier this month, I was in a city everyone wants to visit, we'll call it The City Everyone Wants to Visit, and while I was there I thought I'd catch up with somebody I used to terrible parties in high school. We shall call this person Lawyer One.

Lawyer One told me the law firm this person works with (as partner) is always interested in building connections abroad.

As it happens, I know a couple of lawyers where I live. We shall call them Lawyer Two and Lawyer Three.

By pure chance, they're a perfect fit. They do the same things and cover the same part of the law.

Amazing, so now they're going to be working together.

I'm happy I made those things happen, and let's face it I have a vested interest in one of these people (you're never gonna guess which), but maybe I should get paid.

Maybe this should be a career.
