1. Start with the Mindset (Always)
People always ask, "Why do I hate studying so much? Why can't I enjoy studying the same way I enjoy movies or gaming?"
Simple answer: because studying isn't designed to be loved.
Studying doesn't give your brain that rapid-fire dopamine reward cycle like movies do. Movies? They hit you with dopamine scene after scene. Games? Instant gratification. Social media? One scroll, another dopamine shot.
But studying? You may not see the result today, or next month, or even in 6 months. Maybe it'll show in 2 years. And that delay makes your brain go, "Why should I suffer now for a maybe later?"
That thought? That's the trap. That's where mindset kicks in.
The human mind is powerful — but controlling it even a little makes you unstoppable. You don't need motivation all the time. You need understanding. You need to accept that your brain will choose comfort every time — unless you train it to think long-term.
2. Delay Gratification (The Real Hack)
Success is about this ONE thing:
Can you delay a little pleasure now to get bigger rewards later?
It’s hard, I get it. It’s easy to open YouTube or Netflix and enjoy life for 3 hours. It’s 10x harder to open your books when the reward is maybe a good result 6 months later.
But every time you choose the long-term over the short-term, you're building discipline. And that discipline becomes your competitive advantage.
The person who chooses to work for 45 minutes while others scroll TikTok? That’s the person who wins — slowly, quietly, but surely.
3. Silence the Doubt — Even If It’s from People You Love
Let me tell you this: most people out there are waiting for you to fail.
They won’t say it out loud. But they’re watching, waiting, judging. You’ll hear things like:
-
"You're not smart enough."
-
"That exam is too hard for you."
-
"Why are you even trying so hard?"
Sometimes, the worst part is... it's not even strangers. It's your own parents. I’ve felt it too. I know what it’s like to not feel emotionally supported, even by the people who love you the most.
Don’t get me wrong — they may love you deeply. But the way they express love may not be what you need. That disconnect hurts. You might even blame God.
But at the end of the day, it’s not God's fault. It’s not their fault. It’s just life.
And life rewards only one kind of person: the one who keeps moving despite everything. So tune out the noise. Trust yourself.
4. Stop Waiting for Validation
OH GOD, if I could go back and slap my old self, I would.
I wasted so much time waiting for someone to tell me I was good enough. You know what? Most people will never validate you — not until you’re already successful.
You might feel it even in your friend group:
-
If you’re not the smartest one, they may talk over you when it comes to academic stuff.
-
You’ll feel left out, quiet, disconnected.
And you’ll wonder: “Why not me?”
But here’s what you do: Get better quietly. Study harder, grind deeper, and walk back into that group as the underdog who leveled up in silence.
You don’t need their validation. You need your own results.
5. Balance Life — Because You’re More Than Just a Grade
I know — if you're doing something like Sri Lankan GCE A/L, or any other insanely hard or insanely competitive exams or anything like that, your life feels like it revolves around textbooks and exams. You might feel like there’s no time to “live.”
But think about this: What’s the point of success if you feel empty inside?
You don’t want to become rich, famous, or top of your class — and feel like a robot with no memories.
You want a story. A legend. So live a little.
-
Go out and meet people.
-
Make friends — but stay cautious.
-
Laugh a bit.
-
Party once in a while.
Just don’t let go of your goals in the process.
You’ve probably heard it before:
Live. Love. Laugh.
Now actually try doing that. While studying. While grinding. Because THAT is balance.
This post isn’t some motivational speech. It’s my reality. I’m a student, just like you. I know pain. I know pressure. I know what it's like to feel alone, even in a room full of people.
But I also know that the grind is worth it. You’re not just working for a grade. You’re building a version of yourself that even your future self will look at and say:
"Damn. We made it."
